The Skyblaze Chronicles
The Golden Shrine
The Golden Shrine
This magnificent structure resembles an 18th century gothic church. The walls are made of white stone; a magnificent tower rises from the center. Coloured glass murals paint the interior with beautiful rainbows. Fountains and benches are all around the main hall, where white-robed clerics commune and live their lives. In the middle of the room, floating many feet in the air is a giant metal sun, suspended from nothing, golden in colour and spinning slowly. The rings around it rotate in different directions, making it appear as a living creature, watchful over the temple. The magnificent, colourful interior lifts the hearts of those inside and rejuvenates visitor’s sprits. (People rumour that if wounded, the healing light of the colourful windows will protect you, making you well.) Rooms are offered to those in need, blessings are given and healing ointments are sold for adventurers going into danger.
The High Priest is a very powerful man in the church, almost ranking as high as the King. But despite this, he communes often with citizens of the middle and lower classes. He helps those in need and shows them the way of light and goodness. He is also in control of the church, though, and it is his job to set the tithes, keep order and give orders. If you are lucky or in his good graces, he performs powerful blessings for free if he decides to.
The Shining Eight are the churches army, highly skilled paladins sent to force the will of good and purity and to strike down the workings of evil and corruption. These 11th level paladins are of the most feared and respected among the church, feared by those with clouded hearts, respected and welcomed to those of pure nature. They often go on crusades to slay powerful demons and monsters to save the city from attacks or corruption, and also protect the church from the temple of shadows and their fanatics.
Gold and other rewards are given to those who perform tasks and quests in the churches name. The high priest could also become interested in you, giving you special boons to aid you later on. Free resurrections and healings are also given to those in the good graces of the church. Possible quests could include:
—Slaying bands of monsters seen in the forests
—Sending messages to temples in cities or towns nearby
—Bringing potions and herbs to heal the wounded
—Collecting tithes from obstinate peasants
—Collecting the materials to perform rituals or potions
—Converting nearby woodmen tribes to the light
Asking around and communing with the clerics and priests is a good way to hear about these tasks and quests. Inform an arch-priest if you are interested in doing any of these tasks, and he should give you the information you need to set out.
